Jenny

Another day of work is done earlier than planned and I’m on my way home while toying with the idea of visiting the shelter.

My worries that Lacey might not be interested in me because I’m such a chicken shit evaporate when I receive a text from her telling me that, as much as she wants to visit me again, she can’t because of work. She did say she’ll definitely stop by as soon as she’s able.

Since I’ve been thinking long and hard about what to do regarding my feelings for Lacey, I decide to follow through with what I told Odin. With him as my witness, I will do my best to make it up to her by starting to let her into my life.

I can try and tell her little bits about me before I share my own life story and dilemmas. I just hope that she won’t regret choosing me after learning about all my baggage.

As soon as I open the door to my apartment, I half-expect my place will be a picture of destruction and disaster. Instead, my huge dog pounces on me.

It doesn’t take much for me to lose my balance. Odin and I both fall to the floor in the middle of the hallway. Odin is licking and hovering over me, as if he’s afraid I might disappear and leave him again.

“Okay, okay, Odin, calm down. I’m home, boy, now let me up,” I tell him while laughing. I guess it’s too much to ask for him to understand what I’m saying, so I have to pry him off of me.

Making a beeline for the sofa, which I’m beginning to think is his favorite spot in the whole apartment other than the foot of my bed, he perches on top and waits for me to settle in beside him as I did yesterday.

Plopping myself next to him, I survey the apartment and smile when I see there are no more additional bite marks on the furniture and the sheets. It’s all thanks to Lacey’s suggestions to buy him chew toys and help him walk off his excess energy.

The last time Odin destroyed my apartment, I had to throw away all the sheets because they were beyond repair. I couldn’t afford to do the same to my furniture but, thankfully, the only ones I couldn’t salvage were small wooden items like my small footstool. Everything else could still be used.

I check my wristwatch and a peek outside my window shows me that despite being a sunny afternoon, it’s pretty cloudy outside. As I was walking home, I also noticed that there was an occasional breeze. I’d say this is a perfect time to treat Odin to a walk.

Asking Odin if he wants to go for a walk is my favorite part of the day.

“Hey, Odin,” I call him, following Lacey’s pointers on how to modulate my voice in a way I can catch Odin’s attention. When he turns to me, I ask, “Want to go for a walk, boy?”

Just like that, Odin jumps from the sofa to run like a mad dog toward the bedroom.
